Mental health and wellness in the workplace Conference

While there are many factors that can affect workplace mental health, the current pandemic has highlighted several areas of concern for employers.

Firstly, the home working vs. office debate is ongoing, leaving many people unsure about how their working day will actually look whilst others are uncertain if they will even have a job. And, while flexible home working has been a positive for many, for others it’s brought the blurring of the work/life balance, feelings of being emotionally-separated from work and of not being supported or motivated by colleagues or managers.

And the impact of this, is starting to show…

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, some 42% of employees globally have reported a decline in mental health.  While a recent study revealed symptoms of burnout are increasing among employees and leaders alike.

And even more worrying: The World Health Organization found poor mental health can manifest itself in workplace as increased absenteeism and presenteeism, as well as the loss of productivity. They estimate depression, anxiety disorders, and other conditions cost the global economy $1 trillion per year in lost productivity!

It’s with this mind that we’ve developed a two-day Mental health and wellness in the workplace Conference, which will take place online on 4 and 5 November 2021.

Employee wellbeing can no longer be a ‘nice to have’ or ‘tick-box’ exercise. Now, more than ever, it’s essential for organisations to invest more in mental health support programmes for employees. Mental health does not exist in isolation though and it requires a holistic approach to ensure overall employee wellbeing.

The Employee and Corporate Health and Wellness Online Conference will empower and educate managers, HR practitioners and employers across the spectrum with the insights, evidence and practical tools to better manage mental health in the workplace.

She has worked with various corporate and private clients - including The Competition Commission, Nampak, Nelson Mandela University, Duke Corporate Education, Roche Diagnostics, Arcellor- Mittal, The JSE, HSBC, Altron, University of Johannesburg, FitBit, Fleishman-Hillard, Mondelez, Youth Employment Services among others. As a faculty member of the TCC she designs and deliver the Health Module for coaching students and she is also a mentor to student coaches since 2016. She obtained her post graduate diploma in sport nutrition through the International Olympic Committee and has completed many additional short courses in the field of nutrition such as Gut health, CDE, Nutrigenomics etc. Melissa is also a certified Integrative and Functional Nutrition Practitioner. She is passionate about dietetics and converting current nutrition science into practical lifestyle interventions. Myrna studied Occupational Therapy at the University of the Witwatersrand (1989 to 1992). After graduating Myrna worked at Hillbrow Hospital for three years, in the Vocational Rehabilitation Unit. While working there, she designed and implemented a work hardening programme for re-integration into the workplace. In 1995 Myrna joined Alexander Forbes. Over the past 26 years, she has played a pivotal role in expanding the services offered by Health Management Solutions. Myrna has vast experience in health risk management, including employee health and wellness. She has trained many companies on the Code of Good Practice – Key aspects of Disability, and section 8 of the Labour Relations Act. Myrna has also provided training to guide companies on how to implement health risk management programmes and regularly runs workshops on absenteeism and incapacity management in the workplace.

Academically, she holds a MComm (Organisational Psychology) degree, a BComm Hons (Strategic Management) degree, and a MSc degree in Neuroscience-based Leadership. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D., focusing on the behavioural markers of neuroscience-based leadership. Penny researches and writes in the Human Resources Management field, and serves in a voluntary capacity as the Research and Policy Adviser at the SA Board for People Practices since retiring as Head of the HR Research Initiative at the SABPP in 2016. Penny joined the SABPP in 2012 after a long career in HR management including 16 years in various industries at executive level in South Africa and globally, and after spending 4 years doing her Masters and then Doctorate at UJ. She also practised as a partner in the talent management consultancy MDQ Associates, taught a Master’s degree module at UJ and co-supervised at PhD level. One of her main areas of interest over the last three years has been helping HR practitioners deal with handling the difficult issue of sexual harassment in the workplace. She coordinated a multi-disciplinary team which put together the Sexual Harassment Toolkit for HR practitioners, published early in 2020. For the SABPP she authored a series of monthly Fact Sheets, several Position Papers and policy contributions. She edited and wrote several chapters for the SABPP’s book Ethical Competence in HRM Practice, published in 2015, and designed and facilitated Ethics workshops for HR practitioners. She co-authored, with the then CEO of the SABPP, the late Marius Meyer, the first book on HR Risk Management, published in 2017, and the first book on HRM Standards, published in 2019.
