Understanding the New ISO-Learning & Development Standards

The new ISO/TS 30437:2023 standards are a ground-breaking development in the field of Learning and Development (L&D), designed to advance the maturity and impact of the L&D profession. This standard introduces 52 essential metrics for large organisations, with tailored recommendations for small and medium-sized enterprises, including 19 key metrics and 15 focused on informal learning. By adopting these standards, organisations can significantly improve how they measure and deliver L&D, driving better outcomes and more strategic alignment.

Implications for Learning and Development Delivery

The implementation of ISO/TS 30437:2023 will have far-reaching implications for L&D practitioners. It will provide a structured approach to L&D measurement, helping organisations to:

  • Enhance the effectiveness of training programs through data-driven insights.
  • Align L&D initiatives with broader organisational goals.
  • Foster continuous improvement and accountability in L&D delivery.
  • Support the development of a more mature and professional L&D function.

Benefits of Implementing the New Standards

  • Improved Measurement: Clear, standardised metrics allow for consistent tracking of L&D effectiveness.
  • Enhanced Credibility: Adoption of ISO standards elevates the stature of the L&D function within the organisation.
  • Better Decision-Making: Data from standardised metrics informs more strategic L&D decisions.
  • Global Benchmarking: Organisations can compare their L&D practices against global standards, driving continuous improvement.

What are ISO Standards?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global network of 172 national standards bodies. Each member is the foremost standards organisation in its country, representing ISO on a national level. ISO standards are internationally agreed upon by experts and serve as a formula that outlines the best way to perform various tasks. These standards can apply to making a product, managing a process, delivering a service, or supplying materials, covering a vast range of activities. They represent the distilled wisdom of professionals who have deep expertise in their respective fields and understand the needs of the organisations they represent, including manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade associations, users, and regulators. ISO has been a cornerstone for trade and cooperation since 1946, enabling consistent and reliable processes worldwide.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is a member of ISO and plays a crucial role in ensuring that South African industries meet international standards, which in turn fosters growth and facilitates trade on a global scale.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be among the first in the L&D profession to understand and implement this new standard.
